Education & Health Centers of America, Inc. was founded in 1978 with the purpose of treating addicted individuals and their affected families.
EHCA’s first substance abuse rehabilitation center was The Harbor in Hoboken, New Jersey, which opened in 1983.
In 1994 the Board of Trustees of EHCA developed a cost effective residential treatment program for inmates that would be large enough to have an impact on the growing prison population, reducing the cost of housing prisoners, and would provide effective treatment services to ultimately reduce recidivism rates.
EHCA manages programs at five facilities under contract with the NJDOC, the New Jersey State Parole Board, and New Jersey county governments. These facilities include The Harbor in Newark, Tully House in Newark, Bo Robinson Assessment and Treatment Center in Trenton, Talbot Hall in Kearny and Delaney Hall in Newark.
Services at these facilities include assessment and treatment for alcohol and drug abuse, criminogenic risk assessment, job-readiness training and life-skills preparation, a family services program, and a strong Alumni Association. Two of the programs also provide substance use disorder and work release programs. EHCA provides bi-lingual staff for Spanish speaking residents.
Breaking the Cycle Through Reentry
Education & Health Centers of America, Assessment Centers and Treatment/Work Release Programs have been at the forefront of the dramatic decline in New Jersey’s prison population. Independent studies have confirmed the success of New Jersey’s community corrections system since the establishment of Assessment and Treatment Centers. This progress in reducing recidivism, together with an overall reduction in prison population since 1999, is evidence of the effectiveness of EHCA’s ongoing partnership with New Jersey government agencies in their outstanding community corrections system.
In addition to its residential treatment programs, EHCA has established an Incarcerated Veterans Initiative in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
EHCA continues to grow and seek new opportunities.
EHCA seeks to expand its footprint by maintaining its staff of highly qualified professionals in the correctional treatment industry.
